Summer @ Avenues

We have made the decision to cancel all Summer@Avenues programs for this year.

Know that we did not arrive at this decision lightly, and our team considered all possibilities to keep our camp open in order to serve students and families who look forward to the unforgettable experiences we provide each summer. Unfortunately, given the circumstances, this simply was not possible.

To offer some context, Summer@Avenues typically offer the following programs:

Five-day deep dives into new worlds of fun
Our one-week specialty camps are taught by Avenues faculty with unique areas of expertise as well as instructors from partner organizations. These camps are conducted in English and provide a specialized focus.

Under the Sea Artists with Julie Simon (Pre-K and K)

Join Avenues Lower Division teacher Julie Simon in an underwater art study where students will tackle art projects inspired by the colorful creatures of the sea. Students will tap into their creative sides to design watercolor seahorses hiding in tissue paper seaweed, octopi with the wildest oil pastel arms, and fish that blow out bubble gems. Take a dive into the deep blue sea!

Dance-a-Ballet with Dina Gray (Pre-K and K)

Join Early Learning Center movement teacher Dina Gray to explore the thrilling world of ballet. Dance-a-Ballet fosters creativity as students explore and recreate famous ballets including Firebird and Swan Lake. Students will blend dance, music, and arts, crafting costumes and scenery for their own unique versions of classic ballets. A wide variety of movement activities such as yoga, obstacle courses, gym games, and tumbling are part of this one-week camp. Families are invited for a performance on the last day.

Make a Musical: Frozen Adventures (Pre-K and K)

Summer@Avenues partners with children’s theater education company Child’s Play NY for this one-week musical theater camp that will have students singing and dancing all throughout the summer. Drawing inspiration from the classic fairy tale “The Snow Queen” as well as more recent, popular children’s movies, students will engage in theater games and improvisation exercises that will have them racing reindeer, getting lost (and found!) in the woods, and belting songs out loud to unite the kingdoms! The program fosters self-expression and artistry as students learn improv skills, vocal warm ups, character development, singing, and choreography under the guidance of professionally-trained actors. Families are invited for a performance on the last day.

Players Series: Hogwarts School (Grades 1–2)

Summer@Avenues partners with children’s theater education company Child’s Play NY for Players Series: Hogwarts School! Drawing on the Harry Potter fantasy novels, this camp will have students tapping into the “magic” of theater to learn improvisation skills and how to collaborate with directors and other actors as part of an ensemble. Students gain confidence on the stage while creating scenes based on favorite iconic characters or new ones they invent! Students will be jumping on their Firebolt for games of Quidditch, making books of spells, and competing for the House Cup. Families are invited for a performance on the last day.

Parkour: Superhero Club (Grades 1–2)

What do Spider-Man, Captain America, Batman, and Aladdin all have in common? They all do parkour! This one-week parkour camp teaches students how to overcome obstacles using only their bodies and the principal patterns of movement—all with a thrilling superhero theme! Taught by New York City’s premier parkour instructor Bryce Clarke, this camp will have students sprinting, climbing, jumping, rolling and vaulting all summer long.

Ki-netics Art: Design on a Dime (Grades 3–5)

This summer, tap into your inner designer with Ki-netics Art! Students will blend creativity with entrepreneurship in this unique camp in which they will design new fashions and footwear. Led by industry experts, students will practice designing logos, dying fabrics, sewing, sketching footwear designs, and creating new design models while learning about production, as well as material and marketing costs.

Spark Business Academy: Shark Tank (Grades 3–5)

Summer@Avenues partners with Spark Business Academy for this week-long Shark Tank-themed business adventure! Join like-minded, enterprising campers to develop business plans and boldly pursue new business ventures. Campers will learn to take risks and persevere in a business environment while making decisions around strategy, marketing, and finance. A learn-by-doing approach teaches campers to be intrepid entrepreneurs capable of persuasively pitching their presentations.

Experience the benefits of language immersion in our signature program
Offered in Spanish or Chinese, these day camps provide a structured, three-week program of hands-on learning, enriching classroom activities, play and exploration, and outdoor time. Camps include themed assemblies and one field trip.

Summer@Avenues encourages but does not require nursery campers to be toilet trained.

Solve real-world problems by practicing innovation and collaboration
Aviator Camp takes a STEAM-based approach to critical thinking and problem solving, challenging campers to work across disciplines while collaborating with their peers. Campers will spend their time in a combination of classroom activities, outdoor play, and student-led, play-based learning. Aviator Camp includes themed assemblies and one field trip.

For campers who are English language learners, Summer@Avenues provides language support to ensure full engagement.

Creativity-boosting explorations of visual arts and social entrepreneurship
Based on one of Avenues’ most distinctive pedagogies, these day camps encourage campers to take ownership of their learning through exposure to the arts and social work. These camps are conducted in English and offer small class sizes, a thoughtfully-designed curriculum, and a strong connection to the Avenues World Elements, Avenues’ global curriculum.

For campers who are English language learners, Summer@Avenues provides language support to ensure full engagement.

Session One: Visual Arts - Ceramics and Watercolor

Guided by expert instructors, campers will practice a variety of ceramics and watercolor-painting techniques. Campers will experiment with drape-molds, hand-built vessels, functional items and decorative sculpture. They will practice perceptual and observational painting skills using watercolor and acrylic paints to create a collection of landscape paintings. Instructors encourage campers to “break out of the box" through the expressive use of color and by providing targeted creative prompts.

Session Two: Social Entrepreneurship

Learn how designers and social entrepreneurs identify global issues, then prototype and test their solutions with real users. Campers break down the process of problem identification, research, brainstorming, interviewing, prototyping, pitching and then launching their social venture ideas in a real-world context and with an entrepreneurial instructor. Middle grades campers become social entrepreneurs by developing communication, collaboration and creative skills while working towards global social impact.

A first school experience for incoming Small World students

Small Summer introduces our youngest campers to classroom life through music, art and hands-on activities. Parents or caregivers are encouraged but not required to accompany their children in the classroom.
